Reporting the success of the just concluded BELWIDIC Program; Mitigating Ethno-religious inequalities and discriminations in Plateau State (funded by PeaceDirect Local Action Fund).
A Glimpse of the participants
A participant posed a question to us towards the end of the programme, he said and I quote “what are you doing or what plans or arrangements are you putting in place to see that this our coming together to interact goes beyond this event or gathering and doesn’t just end here”
what touched me the more and made me see the seriousness of the question was when all the other participants over 270 of them (remember we budgeted for 100), agreed with him and turned to us for an answer, right there and then I saw youths that were yarning for fellowship, togetherness something more than just the workshop or the 3 months activities, for me that was the turning point the point of change to be precise.
For me I believe they came to an understanding that they have been hurting themselves, treading on the path of violence and separation, they talked about how they used to live peacefully together, visit each other and sometimes even sleep over. I saw them relishing on those moments but now they are separated and can hardly go into each other’s territory freely without the fear of something going wrong. I saw feelings of disappointment and regrets, and the desire for things to go back the way the used to be, desire for togetherness again, in fact this inspired a new project idea for us at BELWIDIC.
